What is the Global Energy and Climate Change Workshop?

The Telefónica Global Energy and Climate Change Workshop is a yearly meeting of the company’s leaders in energy transformation and other principal collaborating companies.

The event’s main goal is to take advantage of the current opportunities that abound in this field and to encourage innovation in order to reduce Telefónica’s energy consumption and carbon footprint at a global level. At this event, presentations are given on the most recent initiatives in renewable energies and energy efficiency. It will be a moment for analysis and for setting new challenges: the event brings together the different areas of the company that are responsible for network infrastructure, finances, purchasing and sustainability.

Every year more than 250 attendees from all the countries in which Telefónica operates meet at the event, so after 14 years of meetings, we can say our Global Energy and Climate Change Workshop is clearly an established and key event for promoting a low-carbon economy at Telefónica.

Why energy and climate change at Telefónica?

Telefónica's ambition is for a world where technology contributes to protecting the planet. We are therefore committed to a global environmental strategy and act at different levels, always in line with our business strategy. The environment is a cross-cutting issue for the entire company, involving operational and management areas as well as business and innovation areas.

Our target: Net Zero Emissions by 2040

The SBTi (Science-Based Targets initiative) has defined the concept of 'net zero emissions' as achieving a balance between the emissions that a company produces and those that it removes or eliminates from the atmosphere. The commitment to achieve net zero, according to this organization, includes two premises:

  • Reduce our CO2 emissions in line with the 1.5ºC scenario of the Paris Agreement.
  • Neutralize remaining emissions by permanently capturing or absorbing an equivalent amount of CO2 from the atmosphere through carbon credits.

Telefónica is aware of its role as a driver of change in the economy and society through digitalization. In fact, the ICT sector is one of the six major sectors of activity that are included in the European regulation of taxonomy of sustainable activities and therefore, it is one of the sectors that has the potential to contribute substantially to the climate objectives set by the European Union.

Therefore, Telefónica is committed to be Zero Net Emissions by 2040, reducing emissions in our operations and throughout our value chain (science-based targets in line with the 1.5ºC scenario) and neutralizing the remainder through the purchase of CO2 absorption carbon credits.

To achieve this, we have designed a Climate Action Plan to integrate and achieve these objectives across the company. The plan defines actions in Telefónica's operational model, in its commercial and financial strategy, and in its commitment to customers, the supply chain and society.

But this is nothing new for Telefónica; its commitment to energy and climate change has gone a long way in its efforts to drive energy efficiency and emissions reductions:

  • We have been working on energy efficiency for 18 years: in 2005 we began the journey with the participation of 4 LATAM operators and created the first manual of best efficiency practices.
  • Our claim, "change to stop the change": Creation of the Climate Change Office in 2007 to bring efforts from multiple areas into the company's strategy and setting of the first global energy and climate change targets 2008-2015.
  • First Global Workshop on Energy and Climate Change in 2010.

Through Telefónica's Climate Change Office we are promoting our Energy Efficiency Programme and our Renewable Energy Plan, with the latest results:

In seven years we have reduced our total emissions (Scope 1, 2 and 3) by 51% and our own emissions by 80%.

100% renewable electricity consumption in Europe, Brazil, Chile and Peru, and 82% globally. Our goal, framed within the RE100 initiative, is to be 100% renewable by 2030 in all our operations.

We have implemented more than 1,500 energy efficiency projects since 2010, which have generated savings of more than 1,714 M€ and 11,050 GWh and have avoided the emission of 3.3 MtCO2e into the atmosphere.

We decoupled our growth from our emissions: we improved the ratio of energy consumption per unit of traffic by 87% compared to 2015, by decreasing energy consumption by 7.2% and increasing data traffic by 7.4 times over the same period.

We offset 61% of 2022 operational emissions from Germany, Brazil and Spain through the purchase of more than 35,000 high-quality carbon credits.

€17 billion in sustainable financing by May 2023, which has helped the deployment of more efficient networks.

Our networks are green: we are 100% renewable in Europe, Brazil, Chile and Peru, fibre is 85% more energy efficient than copper and 5G is 90% more energy efficient than 4G
