What is the Global Energy and Climate Change Workshop?

The Telefónica Global Energy and Climate Change Workshop is a yearly meeting of the company’s leaders in energy transformation and other principal collaborating companies.

The event’s main goal is to take advantage of the current opportunities that abound in this field and to encourage innovation in order to reduce Telefónica’s energy consumption and carbon footprint at a global level. At this event, presentations are given on the most recent initiatives in renewable energies and energy efficiency. It will be a moment for analysis and for setting new challenges: the event brings together the different areas of the company that are responsible for network infrastructure, finances, purchasing and sustainability.

Every year more than 250 attendees from all the countries in which Telefónica operates meet at the event, so after 10 years of meetings, we can say our Global Energy and Climate Change Workshop is clearly an established and key event for promoting a low-carbon economy at Telefónica.

Why energy and climate change at Telefónica?

Telefónica's ambition is for a world where technology contributes to protecting the planet. We are therefore committed to a global environmental strategy and act at different levels, always in line with our business strategy. The environment is a cross-cutting issue for the entire company, involving operational and management areas as well as business and innovation areas.

Our Energy and Climate Change targets: Net zero emissions by 2040

Telefónica is aware of its role as a driver of change in the economy and society through digitalization. In fact, the ICT sector is one of the six major sectors of activity that are included in the European regulation on the taxonomy of sustainable activities and is therefore a sector that has the potential to contribute substantially to the climate targets set by the European Union.

Telefónica aims to lead through example and reduce its own emissions, as well as those of its value chain. Therefore, in 2020, knowing the urgency of reducing CO2 emissions, Telefónica increased its climate ambition and announced new Energy and Climate Change targets for 2025, 2030 and 2040, aligned with the 1.5ºC scenario of the Paris Agreement and validated by the SBTi initiative.

To ensure compliance with its objectives, Telefónica has a climate action plan, which is integrated into its governance model and includes the quantification of emissions, the implementation of specific actions with verifiable KPIs and the definition of responsibilities for oversight and accountability in the organization.

But this is nothing new for Telefónica; its commitment to energy and climate change has gone a long way in its efforts to drive energy efficiency and emissions reductions:

  • We have been working on energy efficiency for 17 years: in 2005 we began the journey with the participation of 4 LATAM operators and created the first manual of best efficiency practices.

  • Our claim, "change to stop the change": Creation of the Climate Change Office in 2007 to bring efforts from multiple areas into the company's strategy and setting of the first global energy and climate change targets 2008-2015.

  • First Global Workshop on Energy and Climate Change in 2010

Through Telefónica's Climate Change Office we are promoting our Energy Efficiency Programme and our Renewable Energy Plan, with the latest results:

  • In 2021 we have decreased by 70% our CO2 emissions since 2015 for Scopes 1+2, by 27.4% for Scope 3 since 2016 and reduced by 86% our energy consumption per unit of traffic.

  • In Europe, Brazil and Peru, 100% of the electricity we consume at our own facilities comes from renewable sources (79.4 % at global level). Our goal, as part of the RE100 initiative, is for the electricity we consume in all our operations to come entirely from renewable sources in 2030.

  • Since we started working on energy efficiency in 2005, a total of 1,441 projects have been implemented, saving more than 1,266 million euros.

  • We decoupled our growth from our emissions: Thanks to the implementation of energy efficiency projects, we have managed to reduce power consumption by 7.2% since 2015, while data traffic through our networks has increased 6.7 times over.

Without our Renewable Energy Plan, Telefónica’s emissions would have more than doubled. This shows that renewable energies are essential to decarbonise our business and reduce our carbon footprint in absolute terms.

Our networks are green: we are 100% renewable in Europe, Brazil and Peru, fibre is 85% more energy efficient than copper and 5G is 90% more energy efficient than 4G

Sustainable financing contributes to Telefónica's decarbonisation strategy and its goals to reduce emissions and energy consumption.

Telefónica is one of the largest sustainable issuers in the telecommunications sector in the bond market, both in terms of volume, number and diversification of issues (green senior bonds, green or sustainable hybrid instruments, etc.). By 2022, we have reached the target we had set ourselves of exceeding 10 billion in sustainable financing. To this end, Telefónica has a Sustainable Financing Framework (updated in 2021 and verified by Sustainalytics), which allows it to issue green, social and sustainable bonds, which is reviewed periodically and we continue to work to expand ESG criteria in our financing model on an ongoing basis and we have set ourselves the goal of achieving 25% of our financing to be sustainable by 2025. You can consult all the information on Telefónica's sustainable financing issuance history.
