What is the Global Energy and Climate Change Workshop?

The Telefónica Global Energy and Climate Change Workshop is a yearly meeting of the company’s leaders in energy transformation and other principal collaborating companies.

The event’s main goal is to take advantage of the current opportunities that abound in this field and to encourage innovation in order to reduce Telefónica’s energy consumption and carbon footprint at a global level. At this event, presentations are given on the most recent initiatives in renewable energies and energy efficiency.

It will be a moment for analysis and for setting new challenges: the event brings together the different areas of the company that are responsible for network infrastructure, finances, purchasing and sustainability.

Each year the event brings together more than 250 people from all the countries where Telefónica is present, so after 10 years of meetings, we can say our Global Energy and Climate Change Workshop is clearly an established and key event for promoting a low-carbon economy at Telefónica.

Why energy and climate change at Telefónica?

Telefónica seeks a world where technology contributes to protect the planet through efficiency, digital solutions, emission reduction and alignment with the global commitment to mitigate the effects of climate change, not exceeding 2ºC of temperature (2DS), according to the Paris Agreement.

Therefore, we are committed to a global environmental strategy and act at different levels, always in line with our business strategy. Environment is a cross-cutting issue for the whole company, involving both operational and management areas, as well as business and innovation areas.

For this reason, through Telefónica's Climate Change Office we are promoting our Energy Efficiency Programme and our Renewable Energy Plan, with the latest results:

  • We reduced our energy consumption per unit of traffic by 72%.
  • We decoupled our growth from our emissions by reducing our C02 emissions by 50%
  • A total of 1050 projects have been launched, saving more than €760MM.
  • We increased our electricity from renewable sources to 82%, which is equivalent to the average annual consumption of 1,200,000 households.

Telefónica’s emissions without our renewable energy and energy efficiency plan would have doubled. This shows that renewable energies are essential to decarbonise our business and reduce our carbon footprint in absolute terms.
